An injury that occurs in the neck, whiplash occurs like the crack of a whip.
A forceful, quick thrusting of the head forward then backward, this injury is most often felt from a car accident.
Whiplash is not usually apparent until 24 hours or so after the injury. In addition to neck pain, symptoms include:
- Limited range of motion in the neck
- Shoulder or back pain
The ACA asserts that electrical stimulation and/or ultrasound may provide some short-term relief. A program of exercise and stretching as well as spinal manipulation can also give relief in many whiplash cases.
