Overloaded backpacks are not only uncomfortable but they can cause serious problems due to the disproportionate amount of weight being hauled around, sometimes just on one shoulder.

We hear it all the time. Shoulder, neck and back pain are the result of kids' carrying too much weight in their school backpacks. In fact, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that backpack-related injuries sent more than 6,000 people to the emergency room in 2016 alone.

A child's backpack's should weigh no more than 10 percent of his or her body weight.

Using ergonomically correct backpacks is also critical, to avoid bending forward to compensate for the weight, which causes muscle strain and possible spinal misalignment. Both shoulder straps should always be used to evenly distribute the weight being carried, and all straps should be properly adjusted.

Gentle spinal adjustments can help your children if they are experiencing pain or discomfort resulting from backpack use. There are special, easy exercises kids can do as well, in order to develop the proper muscles and improve posture.
