5 Things to Consider When Choosing a Chiropractor

You decided to see a chiropractor but now you need to choose one that will meet your needs. Do you know what to look for? Just as with any health professional, take the time to do a little research before scheduling your appointment. Check out this list to help you with getting the info you need before you make an appointment!

  1. Referrals & Recommendations

The best first step in finding the right chiropractor for your needs is to ask for referrals. Talk to friends and family and see if they have anyone they recommend. Check-in with your primary care physician, and ask who they typically refer patients to - this will help you narrow down your search. Also, be sure to do some research online and see what others are saying, from Google to Facebook you can find lots of resources for reviews.

  2. Certifications and Credentials

Understand why you want to see a chiropractor and then make sure they are certified in the areas you need. After earning their degrees in a little more than five years, doctors will earn post-grad certifications in different specialties. Additionally, be sure to research credentials to make sure you find a highly qualified chiropractor.

  3. Insurance

Find out if the chiropractor takes insurance and if your insurance covers chiropractic visits. You also should reach out to the chiropractor to find out the typical costs associated with their offerings. If they aren’t willing to be transparent with their pricing then that can be a red flag.

  4. Chiropractic Approach

Meet with a chiropractor to discuss his/her approach. Your comfort with them is key to successful treatment so you two must be on the same page. Learn about what the recommended treatment is and if it matches what you are comfortable with.

  5. First Appointment

At your first appointment - a reputable chiropractor will take the time to perform a physical exam and discuss a detailed health history. You might also be given a digital x-ray to help understand your musculoskeletal system. A best practice is to have your appointments in a private office, not in an open room where other patients are receiving treatment at the same time. Would you visit your primary care physician in a large room with other appointments occurring at the same time? - No! - So, you shouldn’t deal with that in your chiropractic appointments either.

There are a lot of variables in finding the right chiropractor for your individual needs but the five items listed here will help you narrow down your search and identify the right professional for you.
